Labor and delivery management

Labor and delivery management refers to the systematic care, monitoring, and interventions provided to a woman during labor and childbirth to ensure the safety and well-being of both the mother and the newborn.

Stages of Labor Management

• First stage : Monitor cervical dilation and contractions
• Second stage : Assist with pushing and delivery of the baby
• Third stage : Manage delivery of placenta and prevent hemorrhage

Fetal Monitoring

• Monitors fetal heart rate and uterine contractions.
• Assesses fetal well-being and oxygen supply.
• Detects signs of fetal distress.
• Can be external (abdominal sensors) or internal (during labor).
• Used during late pregnancy and labor.
• Helps guide clinical decisions during childbirth.
• Ensures maternal and fetal safety.

Pain Management

• Provide emotional support and reassurance
• Use non-pharmacological methods (breathing, positioning)
• Administer analgesics or anesthesia when indicated

Infection Prevention

• Maintain strict aseptic techniques
• Limit unnecessary vaginal examinations
• Maternal Support and Comfort
• Encourage mobility and proper positioning
• Maintain hydration and nutrition as appropriate
• Provide psychological support

Fetal Care

• Continuous or intermittent fetal heart monitoring
• Identify and manage fetal distress promptly

Delivery Care

• Ensure safe vaginal or assisted delivery
• Perform episiotomy only if indicated
• Prepare for emergency interventions if required

Post-Delivery Care

• Monitor mother for bleeding and uterine contraction
• Immediate newborn assessment (Apgar score)
• Promote early breastfeeding and bonding
