Tubal Ligation

“Tubal ligation” is a medical procedure for permanent female sterilization. It’s sometimes called “having your tubes tied.” Here’s a thorough breakdown:

  • It involves blocking, tying, or cutting the fallopian tubes, which carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus.
  • This prevents fertilization because sperm cannot reach the egg.

Purpose / Indications

  • Permanent birth control for women who do not want future pregnancies.
  • It does not affect menstruation or hormone production.

Laparoscopic Tubal Ligation

  • Small abdominal incision; a laparoscope (tiny camera) is used.
  • Tubes are clipped, tied, or cauterized.

  • Mini-laparotomy

    • Small incision near the belly button, often used after childbirth.

    Hysteroscopic Tubal Occlusion

    • Device is placed inside the fallopian tubes via the uterus.
    • Less common now due to some complications with older devices.

    Effectiveness

    • Highly effective : Over 99% in preventing pregnancy.
    • Considered permanent, though reversal is sometimes possible with surgery—but it’s not always successful.
