Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to examine and operate on organs inside the abdomen or pelvis. Instead of making a large incision like in traditional open surgery, laparoscopy uses small incisions (usually 0.5–1.5 cm) through which specialized instruments and a camera (called a laparoscope) are inserted. The camera sends images to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to see the area in detail and perform procedures with precision.

Purpose / Indications

Laparoscopy can be diagnostic or therapeutic:

Diagnostic

  • Unexplained abdominal pain
  • Infertility evaluation
  • Investigation of tumors or cysts

Therapeutic / Surgical:

  • Removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy)
  • Appendix removal (appendectomy)
  • Hernia repair
  • Gynecological surgeries (e.g., ovarian cyst removal, hysterectomy)
  • Bariatric surgery for obesity
  • Treatment of endometriosis

Procedure

  • Anesthesia : Usually general anesthesia.
  • Incision and Access : Small incision (usually at the navel) is made.
  • Insufflation : Carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas is used to inflate the abdomen for better visualization.
  • Insertion : Laparoscope and instruments are inserted through trocars (small tubes).
  • Operation : Surgeon views the monitor and performs the necessary procedure.
  • Closure : Instruments removed, gas released, and small incisions closed with sutures or adhesive strips.
